According to Ananova, toy makers Mattel are planning to sue a Brazilian artist for her depiction of Barbie as a lesbian.
The exhibition by Karin Schwarz apparently shows Barbie in some ‘compromising positions’ and the toy makers have given Schwarz 24 hours to close down her show or face legal action.
A spokesperson from Mattel said “Barbie is a very proper lady and she is not happy about being portraited as something that she isn’t….We are going to sue and we hope that this teaches people a lesson. Also, Barbie is 46 years old, she should be respected!”
Hmmm, so no hidden homophobia there. And no value judgements that lesbians aren’t proper ladies – or that we don’t have lesbians aged 40 or over!!
Hang on a minute, I don’t know about this art installation but surely if the toy manufacturer sues on this occasion they could face countless future cases?
I can’t be the only one who owned a Barbie who liked to get it on with other Barbies can I? My Barbie was particularly partial to my friend’s Sindy doll when I was younger, and she also had a passionate fling with my Pippa doll once too.
It’s a shame the toy manufacturer are making such a fuss about this – after all it’s not like the artist isn’t showing what goes on in countless girl’s bedrooms worldwide.
