I have provided quotes to over 3500 newspapers and magazines internationally since 2000 and written for newspapers including The Guardian, Daily Mail, Mirror, Sun, Independent, Times, Times Higher Education Supplement,Press Gazette and the New Scientist. In 2010 I assisted with a special issue of ‘Eureka’ Magazine (Times) on the science of sex. I have assisted journalists writing for most UK magazine titles including Cosmopolitan (UK and US editions), Company, Grazia, Men’s Health (UK and US editions), Red, Marie Claire, Top Sante, Esquire and FHM. I have written advice columns for Men’s Health (in print and online), Grazia, B, Sugar, Beauty Zambia and More! I currently write a weekly advice column for The Telegraph.
I have been a consultant and presenter on several television series and programmes including The Sex Education Show (Series 1-3), A Life in Numbers (both Channel 4) and appeared on Horizon (BBC2), The Culture Show (BBC2), Dinner With Portillo (BBC4), This Morning (ITV) and GMTV. On radio I have featured on Radio 4’s ‘Am I Normal?’, Woman’s Hour, You and Yours, Today and The Media Show. From 2002 to 2007 I wrote and hosted a weekly sex and relationships advice phone-in radio show for BBC Radio 5 Live’s Up All Night segment.
This work has been used in training events I have run for print and broadcast journalists in collaboration with the Periodicals Publishers Association (PPA), British Association, The World Service Trust, The British Psychological Society and City University’s MA in Science Journalism. Examples of me detailing problems and opportunities with media sex coverage can be found here and here. I have also written guides on working with the media for Press Gazette and the charity Media Wise. With colleagues I co-run Bad Sex Media Bingo which highlights poor coverage and provides information about how to write sex right.
How can I help you?
Sadly, much media sex coverage is outdated or inaccurate. I want to help you get the best information every time. I specialise in explaining academic research in plain English. I am happy to help find journalists new (and old) research in the area of sex and relationships. I love busting bad sex science and helping journalists find new angles for sex stories. I enjoy talking about sex and relationships in a frank, entertaining and accurate ways.
I can help with:
- Providing quotes for sex and relationships features (particularly those on psychosexual problems, and sex and relationships issues during pregnancy and parenthood)
- Acting as a consultant and/or presenter on radio or television programmes
Please read my ‘About me’ page which will tell you about my areas of research and qualifications. If I can’t help you I usually know someone who can, so drop me an email – although make sure you read the next part which tells you what I can’t do.
I can’t help with:
- Discussing celebrities
- Commenting on case studies (if you want ideas on how to get case studies click here)
- Putting you in touch with participants in my or other academics’ research
- Endorsing story ideas, products or services that are not based in evidence, or are based on PR surveys or fake formula
- I do not work with pharmaceutical companies
Please don’t contact me if this is what you are after. I don’t want to waste your time.
