Rockin’ around the Radio

December 17th, 2005

Dr Petra

Last night on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Up All Night show we got into the spirit of Christmas with choreographer Dana Mayer who taught us all some Christmas dance moves. Presenter Dotun and newsreader Justine put on a particularly festive show, shimmying to seasonal songs, wrapped in feather boas.

Dana teaches pole and exotic dance classes in London at rock’n’roll pole, and was also on hand to offer advice to those worried about their dancing skills at Christmas parties.

Her main advice was to have fun, dance with confidence, find the moves that you feel comfortable with, and even if you’re not a natural dancer put your all into your dancing to convince others you know your stuff. Because it’s fun, Christmas party music is also good to dance to since nobody expects you to be too serious. And you can lead the way getting others to join in to hide your nerves if you’re feeling shy.

As well as our Christmas dancing, we also looked at new research from Playingsafely that asked 1000 people aged 16-30 that 1/3 of people responded had had sex at (or following!) a work Christmas party. Worryingly over half of those people had not used a condom. So our advice for Christmas was to wrap up your willy with a condom and give someone a present that’s safe and sexy :-) Take condoms to Christmas parties, carry them in your makeup bag, wallet or purse. Have condoms at home in case you get lucky, and encourage your friends to do the same.

Many of our listeners wanted to know about buying a Christmas gift for a partner, and one caller suggested a really good solution. He recommended finding out what your partner liked before Christmas to ensure you got a gift with a personal touch. He’d tried this by getting his partner a load of perfume samples so together they chose the scent that suited her best, and then got her that for her present.

Since we didn’t have time to answer everyone’s questions, over the next few days I’ll be posting some more advice about getting the best from the holiday season.
