Sex and science stuff 13/08/07

Each day there are always several science or sex stories I could blog about, so I’ve decided to begin a regular ’sex and science news’ section of this blog to share with you particular issues that have caught my attention.

Amnesty International vs. the Vatican
Following the continued use of rape of women as a war crime and political weapon in Darfur Amnesty International have (finally) decided to speak out against the Catholic church. Amnesty are arguing it’s a violation of women’s human rights to be denied abortions after being made pregnant through rape. The Vatican refuses to budge from its position that abortion is wrong. I happen to think Amnesty is right but wonder why they’ve taken so long to come to this position. More needs to be done about the ongoing crisis in Darfur, not least the systematic sexual abuse of women.

South African Deputy Health Minister Debacle
President Thabo Mbeki has sacked his deputy health minister for not being a team player. Apparently Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge had the audacity to go to an HIV conference which Mbeki apparently didn’t approve of so he’s shown her the door. He hasn’t, however, removed his health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang who doesn’t seem to go to HIV conferences which is probably why he believes beetroot will stave off full blown AIDS.

Dawkins takes on the new agers
Science zealot Richard Dawkins (the man who has absolutely no truck with religion) has turned his attention to attacking tarot, astrology and other new agey stuff. He’s now on a one man crusade to show us all that we’re very ignorant and wrong if we believe in anything alternative or spiritually based. I think Dawkins does have a number of interesting arguments but unfortunately his blind faith in science and attempts to lead us all away from any forms of faith is really just a cult in itself with Dawkins as the rather rude leader. See what you think as he presents ‘The Enemies of Reason’ on Channel 4 at 8pm tonight.

Sad news – Tony Wilson’s Obituary
This has nothing to do with sex or science, but I’m always keen to promote mavericks and it’s with sadness I’m sharing the obituary for visionary Tony Wilson who managed some of the bands who made the soundtrack to my teenage years. Wilson’s unusual business style and approach to management didn’t make him much money – but certainly gave us a huge amount of creative talent. He will be missed.
