Support for domestic violence survivors

September 14th, 2005

Dr Petra

Domestic violence survivors in the West Midlands UK are being given additional help with a new initiative.

People often stay in violent relationships partly because they lack the resources to escape, so a pilot programme will provide an affordable transport service for those who need to exit an abusive relationship.

Survivors will be able to book an appointment for removal of their property from their home – and to take them to their new location.

The Domestic Violence Practice and Information Group are implementing the scheme, with the transport services provided by Solihull Community Transport. It’s being part funded by John Lewis stores.

The pilot will run until 30 November and if successful will be expanded and continued after that date.

For further help on domestic violence in the West Midlands contact the Domestic Violence Co-ordinator on 0121 704 6709 or the Police Domestic Violence Unit on 0121 712 6113. Or visit Women’s Aid or Refuge for support, advice and information.
