Tell the FDA to Stop Blocking Access to Emergency Contraception

October 15th, 2005

Dr Petra

Today I’m handing over to the National Women’s Health Network (NWHN) who have an important message for us…..

Dear NWHN Supporter
Here’s another way for you to express your outrage about the FDA’s foot-dragging refusal to make a decision about whether to allow the emergency contraception pill, Plan B, to be sold over-the-counter (OTC).

As you may recall, in August the FDA indefinitely postponed its decision on the Plan B OTC application. The FDA’s own scientists agreed that Plan B is safe and effective for OTC use, but in spite of that, the agency has continued to block efforts to improve women’s access to this back-up method of preventing unintended pregnancy.

The FDA’s excuse for the delay was to claim that it needed to gather public input on the implications of making Plan B available OTC for some while maintaining prescription status for younger women; but in fact, this is simply another delay tactic from the Bush Administration which clearly has no intention of making it easier for women to get this second chance to prevent pregnancy. It was this failure to act on the science that prompted Dr. Susan Wood, former Director of the Office of Women’s Health at the FDA, to resign in protest, saying that she could “no longer serve as staff when scientific and clinical evidence, fully evaluated and recommended for approval by the professional staff here, has been overruled.”

Senators Clinton and Murray have drafted a letter and petition to the FDA commissioner outlining their concern and dismay with the FDA’s action. Please join them in signing the petition to let the FDA know that it is not acceptable to block women’s access to a drug that has been proven to be safe and effective and that will give more women a second chance to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.
