Want to be a TV expert? Be ’35 and pretty’

In today’s British Medical Journal there’s an interesting review piece asking ‘where do television doctors come from’? The piece discusses a new series ‘Turn back your body clock’, and does explain where journalists and television researchers can find doctors (it’s Association of Broadcasting Doctors if you’re interested).

But that wasn’t what attracted my attention. The piece also contained a quote from Jackie Petts who runs the Association of Broadcasting Doctors explaining, “on the whole, TV companies want pretty doctors – and usually under 35″.

This isn’t exactly news to me – but I was glad to see it confirmed in an academic journal. Of course we want to encourage closer work with the media, but it’s also important to highlight some of these biases – so we can try and tackle them.
