Which part of this sentence does the media not understand? Boots are NOT selling Viagra.

February 14th, 2007

Dr Petra

Sorry for the Valentine’s day rant but the press is yet again full of coverage today telling us that Viagra is now on sale in Boots.

This is not true.

Boots are doing a small scale pilot of three pharmacies in Manchester to see if prescribing samples of the drug to men is worth persuing. They should not have revealed this information until after the pilot study has run (as all this press coverage will skew the responses of people seeking the meds).

The story had a massive amount of exposure on Monday and again the papers, television and radio are telling us that the drug is on sale in your high street pharmacist.

It isn’t.

There are lots of problems with this pilot which you can read in my blog from Monday and also from Cory Silverberg over at About.com.

In the meantime if you’re a British man who thinks he needs Viagra because you can’t get or keep an erection during masturbation or sex with a partner (and this has been the case for weeks or months) then you can go straight to your GP for confidential advice and a prescription or referral to therapy if needed. If you’re any other guy you cannot get the drug from the pharmacy so don’t waste your time trying.

This has turned out to be a very happy Valentine’s day for the shareholders of Boots and Pfizer. It’s not a good day for science, good journalism or the health of the general public.
