A study of 100 sexually active couples presented at the American Psychological Association conference has shown men who work hard enjoy great sex. Apparently the findings were explained as hard-working men using sex as a means to unwind after work.
Researchers claimed that whilst previous studies suggested women whose husbands worked hard reported relationship dissatisfaction, the current study indicated couples enjoyed a good sex life if the man was busy in the workplace.
Which is all very interesting. Most research suggests people who work very hard do encounter sexual difficulties including erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation in men, or lack of desire and problems with orgasm in both genders.
Perhaps this research was based on sexually active, happy couples, where the man enjoys working hard. That would explain these results. Different findings would no doubt be generated if you studied men who are stressed and unhappy at work, or are forced to work long hours without any job satisfaction.
It’s also a bit odd that in the 21st century we’re still carrying out research where we assume that it’s the man who works, or that work is linked to a business environment. Most women work equally hard, either in a paid job, or within the home, or frequently both. This study really only represented middle class westerners using an old-style relationship model – not quite representative of couples globally. A more interesting study might have been to look at the effects of work on sex and relationships – with a focus on the quality of work and its impact on people’s lives.Tweet
