That was a question put to me last week by a journalist working on a Halloween story. Their angle was the influence of the supernatural on your sex life, and they wanted to know if there was any research on people seeing ghosts – and what effect that might have on their libido.
I’m no expert on the paranormal, but I’d be fairly certain that if a ghost showed up while you were having sex it would probably put a dampner on things. Unless it was a very sexy ghost who was willing to join in.
Now, as far as I know (and I’m prepared to be proved wrong on this) I’m pretty certain nobody’s researched ghostly activity relating to sex. But who knows? Perhaps there are people who think they’ve had sex with a ghost. I’m sure there are plenty of couples out there convinced they often sleep with the undead given their partner’s lack of response Maybe ghosts even get it on together? There definitely are a minority of people who are interested in sleeping with corpses but since that’s illegal it’s probably best not mentioned.
So I wasn’t really much help to the journalist (who was aware they were onto a dead end story). However the link between sex and Halloween still continues. Where the media aren’t covering stories of haunted inns, ghostly apparitions and things that go bump in the night, there’s the fallback subplot of sex and spookiness.
Which makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Halloween is a time of playing games, dressing up, and scaring yourself silly. All of which can be sexy as Cory Silverberg points out in his Halloween blog. There’s even been some research into how being scared can increase sexual activity, although the reliability of such studies is somewhat questionable.
And anyone who’s ever seen some early horror films, particularly the silent ones, knows that often horror and eroticisim where intertwined. There’s a lot of sexy subliminal (and not so subliminal) messages in being bitten by vampires or being dragged off by a monster. Or where innocent girls are lured into a fate truly worse than death and made to do unspeakable things.
To wish you a Happy Halloween it’s time to remember that seasonal favourite – the pumpkin dildo. Or if you’re feeling frisky Violet Blue’s created some Halloween erotica in her ‘Creatures of the Night’ audiobook.
If Halloween holds a more spiritual significance, Samhain blessings to you.
And if you happen to see a ghost while you’re having sex please tell me whether it helped or hindered your sex life. Somewhere out there a journalist needs to know.Tweet
